about The Tombs

"Situated near the entrance of Georgetown University campus, The Tombs doubles as a sporting saloon and a neighborhood restaurant. Vintage crew and sporting prints, colorful sweeps, high-backed booths, and leaded glass set the tone.

By day and early evening, The Tombs is a favorite with University faculty and neighbors. Later at night, it becomes a popular gathering place for Georgetown students. On Sunday, brunch after mass at historic Holy Trinity Church is a longtime Georgetown tradition.

Complementing the comfortable surroundings is a simple, affordable menu of burgers, hearty soups and salads, daily specials and house made desserts."

Great food, great bar, good prices. The crab and artichoke dip is my absolute favorite!

For many students over 21, this place becomes home.

Tombs does many things very well. It is a classic college bar/restaurant although at times its a bit pricey for kids on a college student's budget.

The portobello mushroom sandwich is awesome as is the blt, the steak pretty much all sanwiches. Also try some of their really good appetizer and tasting platters--my favorite is the baked brie with baguette you can share it with your table and its incredibly good.

But if you're planning on getting into the bar with a fake forget about it they're about as tough as any place in Georgetown on id's.

Tombs brownie...'nuff said.

Oh, and if you're over 21, be sure to throw down the extra change for the Tombs Ale. Muuuuuuuch better than that Miller High Life crap.

Three words: Southwest. Chicken. Salad.

Every time I go to the Tombs I plan on ordering something else but I always go back to the Southwest Chicken Salad - its awesome!

Sometimes I feel as though this place is overrated. Sure, it's a classic Georgetown tradition, but the prices aren't great and I have only seen students order about 5 different selections from their menu. The atmosphere is good, but the menu doesn't live up.

This place is a Georgetown institution. Doesn't look like much from outside, but the ambiance in this basement-level restaurant is surprisingly nice. The food is great and reasonably-priced. Check out the study-snacks, which are discounted meals and apps during the afternoon. Tradition mandates a visit to Tombs on your 21st.

The entrance makes it look like a college dive, but once you get in, it's a decent restaurant. (I don't know about the bar aspect yet, but I've heard it's great.) My favorite is the Butternut Squash Ravioli, which is also on the Clyde's menu, and I'd take the Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding over the famous brownie (also good) any day. The study snacks idea is genius (great prices), but I wish there were more options. It's all either junk food (fries and onion rings, which aren't that great) or basic salads. I've been disappointed by the more basic menu items. The atmosphere is unbeatable. It's especially nice in the winter to huddle around the fireplace with friends.
